This is by no means an exhaustive list of what's available in the area of prefabricated homes and buildings. This article is to introduce you to the world prefab. If you're in the industry, you'll probably be cringing about now at the word "prefab". But, the word is one that has become synonymous with homes and buildings that have been partially or fully assembled in a factory setting. I for one am excited to see the latest versions of modern prefabs emerging globally. They're well thought out, beautiful, and energy-efficient.

And to anyone who has any doubts about the quality of today's prefab homes, I'd ask, would you rather buy a house whose parts have all been crafted outdoors exposed to the elements -- by hand. Or, would you rather buy a house built in a factory setting to tight specs exceeding that of site-built homes. I say exceeding, because a normal site-built home doesn't have to endure the rigors of transportation.

For your review, here are quick descriptions of 10 of the many categories of prefab homes available for exploring at http://PrefabExpo.com - in no particular order:

1. Manufactured

Single-family residential dwellings consisting of one, two or more sectional units and constructed to Federal HUD code. Zoning regulations and ordinances of the local Municipality or County might not permit use of mobile and manufactured homes in all areas of their jurisdiction.

2. Modular

Modular refers to a method of building a home, rather than a type of home. A modular home can be built in a factory from a stock modular home plan or from a customized plan, to the state, local or regional codes of where the home will be set up. Modular homes have not typically experienced the zoning restrictions and discriminative ordinances applicable to manufactured and mobile homes.

3. Panelized

Panelized homes are factory-built homes in which panels whole walls with windows, doors, wiring, and outside siding are transported to the site and assembled. Panels are made from insulating foam sandwiched between two layers of structural material. The panels are lightweight and might already be filled with insulation when they arrive on the site. The homes must meet the state or local building codes of where they are sited.

4. Steel-frame

Steel framing is an equivalent to conventional stick frame or post & beam home design where the structural lumber is replaced by steel studs and trusses or steel posts and beams. Light-Gauge Framing System features screw-together, galvanized stud-and-truss, grid-type construction system built on 4-foot center.Red-Iron Metal Post & Beam Systems features bolt-together, pre-engineered post-and-beam-type framing system that uses the red-iron steel "C" beams on 8-foot center. The prefabricated home built with this method can be single-story, two-story, and even tri-level home. Unlike conventional wood framed home that requires interior walls to support the roof, the higher strength-to-weight ratio of steel house allows to span greater distances with less material and fewer supports. The result is higher floor layout and interior design flexibility.

Unlike wood, steel won't shrink, rot, warp, buckle, split, or be attacked by insects. This results in greater durability, lower long-term maintenance, higher energy efficiency and overall greater quality of this prefabricated home.

5. Precut

This category includes wood-framed factory-built houses or cabins where building materials are factory-cut to design specifications and transported to the site to be assembled. 7. Timberframe

Timber framing is a specific type of post and beam construction in which a frame is created from solid wood timbers that are then connected by any one of the following wooden joints: mortise and tenon, dovetails, or scarfs secured with hardwood pegs. The frame is covered with any one of a number of enclosure systems. Normally the timbers remain exposed to the interior of the building.

Timber frame structures exhibit a strength and aesthetic quality not found in conventionally framed houses. The timbers are pre-cut, shaped, and finished at the factory, then sent to the construction site, where they can be quickly assembled by a crew, routinely using cranes to lift the bents and beams into place. The use of quality wood, enhanced by joinery that compares with fine cabinet making, maximizes the strength of the timberframe structure. Joinery is the heart of the entire structure.

8. Log

Log homes provide their owners with a comforting and relaxing sense of informality and simplicity. The mass of logs produces heating and cooling benefits, and reduces noise transmission into and throughout the home. These are very attractive characteristics, but there are also challenges in construction and limitations in decorating. These aspects require special design considerations and have unusual maintenance requirements. Basic Kits Are...

WALLS ONLY: The walls-only log home package includes all the logs for the outside walls, including fasteners. Roof beams and staircases may be added.

STRUCTURAL SHELL: Shell This package includes everything that's in the walls-only package, plus all components necessary to keep the weather out, such as exterior doors, windows, and the roofing system.

THE COMPLETE PACKAGE: Complete packages also includes interior components required to finish log homes. Such items include interior walls, stairs, closets, interior doors and trim.

9. Circular

The circle is the strongest geometrical shape we recognize, and this factor likely influenced builders of circular homes for thousands of years. Prefabricated circular buildings have been built as cabins, studios, homes, offices or community halls and convention centers. Most of today's prefabricated circular homes and cabins offered across the country use conventional wood-frame or post & beam construction method. These homes and cabins are ideally suited to take the full advantage of locations offering exciting panoramic views, and to incorporate factor of the surroundings into the home design.

10. Dome

Geodesic Dome is using triangular networks forming hexagons and pentagons and creating a free-span, spacious environment of spherically shaped structure requiring no internal supports. This results in large flexibility for utilizing interior space to implement floor designs not limited by structural restrictions. Because of the structural strength of the shape, the domes have a far better record of withstanding tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes than cube-shaped structures of conventional homes. MATERIAL COSTS: Geodesic domes provide the greatest amount of floor area with the least amount of surface area, reducing the quantity of needed building material by as much as 30-50%.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY: As a result of the shape, the dome has approximately 30-50% less roof and wall area than cube-shaped home of equal floor space. This results in lesser area being exposed to the elements, resulting in reduction in heating and cooling costs of dome shaped structures. Also, the spherical shape of the dome facilitates natural air flow yielding more even temperatures maximizing overall interior temperature comfort.

Disadvantages...

As a result of complicated angles, the interior and exterior finishing of the dome (after speedy assembly of the prefabricated shell) is significantly more labor intensive than finishing the conventional house. Also, the finishing work requires highly skilled or specialized tradesmen which might not be available at every location. These factors might present welcoming challenge for skilled handyman - homebuilder, but would create substantial cost outlay if the hired labor is considered.

Excitement and great expectations filled my life before the hurricane. I had met a beautiful woman from California, who later became my wife. Before we married, she flew out to visit me and help in my work with the homeless. She had no idea what was about to happen and neither did I. She bounced from one wall to the other babbling insolently about someone she hated. Her eyes bulged, her hair matted and she didnt have on shoes. The putrid smell of alcohol reeked from her pours and floated through the office like a stink bomb.

Joanne jumped from her chair, Mary moved around to the other side of my desk, and I headed for the front room where the lady was yelling. The man who brought her had a grin on his face and said, Bob you told me to bring them to you.

Yeah, I did say that didnt I. The woman was still bouncing around as if her skin was on fire so I turned my attention to her. I tried to calm her down but nothing seemed to work. She seemed to get even angrier when I spoke. Every other word she used was a cuss word. The man who brought her was standing in the background watching, wondering what I was going to do. Finally, much to Marys surprise, I ask her if she would talk to the lady, she agreed. Mary took the woman into the back office, sat down, and talked to her while I ask the homeless man about the woman. He told me she had lived on the streets for a long time. He also told me she was a prostitute at one time she was a prominent member of the community. My friend, I am not sure what I can do to help her. I ask him what he thought I should do. He didnt know. He was doing what I asked him to do and he did want to help her if he could.

After a few minutes, I went back in and found Mary and the lady faced to face in a quite conversation. I was baffled. I sat down and began asking the woman a few questions. She needed hospitalization but was unwilling to go. She told us about being raped many times living on the streets. She was so anger towards her family and all she wanted to talk about was who she hated. Her poor heart was filled with resentment, bitterness, and fear. I felt so sorry for her. I didnt want to call the police, maybe I should have but I didnt. Finally, she was up bouncing again in her bare feet. She didnt have any shoes. Mary took off her shoes and gave them to her. The man who brought her finally took her by the arm and headed for the door. He grinned at me again and told me they had to leave and out the door, they went.

We, Joanne, Mary, and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. Many of the people I met on the streets were just like this woman. They hated everyone and everything. Research and my own experiences hold that resentment is a leading cause of drug and alcohol abuse. In order to live a sober, purposed fill like an addict must deal with these resentments.

In Biloxi, most of the homeless, not all, especially before the storm where addict to alcohol or other drugs. It is sad how we, and I include myself, sell our souls for a chemical. The fact remains, many of the individuals I worked with dealt with major resentments by using chemicals in attempt to alter their feelings.

Before I could move on with life and become productive, again I had to deal with several major resentments, which cropped up because of life. My divorce, the consequences of Katrina, and many more resentments had taken root in my life and served as a poison, which kept me frozen in time. It is remarkable how resentment keeps your attention on the past and never allows you to think of the present. I had to go back and find out why and exactly what I was angry about and then forgive myself and others for the wrong or the perceived wrongs, which happened in the past few years.

In addition to locating these resentments, I also had to become willing to forgive others and myself. This is where it gets hard because we must take action on the resentments which our lodged deeply in our hearts.

When it became obvious that there was going to be a shooting war between the North and the South, there were days of immense personal conflict to a great many regular army officers. Among them, of course was Robert E. Lee, who was one of the most famous officers in the army, and to whom Winfield Scott offered top command of the Union army. Lee took a day or two to mediate over this. As a professional army officer, naturally, this was not the sort of thing a man turns down lightly. But he finally refused it on the grounds that he was, after all, a loyal son of Virginia. We don't have that sort of loyalty to homeland these days. But they did then. Lee had it as did a great many other men. Lee had to go with his state and so turned down the promotion and became a General in the Confederate army.

Other officers on lower levels had the same problem. There was a very poignant incident that occurred in what was then the little town of Los Angeles. In an army fort close by to the town, one night in the spring, a farewell party in the officers' quarters was given for some of the officers who were resigning their commissions to go South, as Lee had done. Others were staying in the Union army. One of the latter was a Captain name Winfield Scott Hancock. During the course of the evening, an old friend, Captain Lewis Armistead, came to him. With tears in his eyes, Armistead took Hancock's hand and gripped it saying, " Hancock, you'll never know what this is costing me, but good-bye, good-bye".

As they were saying good-bye, a woman who was present, the wife of one of the officers, sat at the piano and sang the haunting tune "Kathleen Mavourneen" - "when will we se each other; it may be for years and it may be forever".

Armistead went to Richmond; Hancock to Washington. In July of 1863, these two old friends who had not seen each other since that spring evening in Los Angeles crossed paths at the battle of Gettysburg. Hancock was in charge of the Union line Cemetery Ridge around that famous landmark, the "little clump of trees". Pickett's charge was heroically moving forward and at the spearhead of it was a man who carried his felt hat on the point of his sword and waved it high over his head so that his soldiers could see it; that man was General Lewis Armistead. As the Confederates reached the Union line and broke into the middle of it, Hancock was shot down with a wound in his thigh.

Armistead reached a battery in the center of Hancock's line, placed his hand on the muzzle of one of the cannons, waved that hat on the point of his sword and then was shot. He lived just long enough to ask the officers who tried to pick him up and tend him to give his love to General Hancock. It was that kind of war.

There is a school of thought that brushing your hair is good for it, even compared with combing. The reasoning is that brushing is just like massaging the scalp, which will increase blood circulation, and hence stimulate hair growth. This is also nonsense; in fact too much brushing could damage the hair by causing split ends.

Standing on Your Head

One of the more bizarre rumours about hair loss is that if you stand on your head this will increase blood flow to the head. The theory is that the increased flow of blood to the head will stimulate hair growth. This is also nonsense

For example: "8:30 opened mail; 8:50 call from Smith; 9:15 call to Lopez; 9:25 reviewed memo; etc." That's it. Simply record what you do.

At some point, you will look at this list. You'll see that you are spending too much time on the phone with Smith, or that you really WANTED to write a certain memo but didn't get around to it, so maybe tomorrow you need to do that first. This is the beginnings of making time management a habit. YOU will then begin to decide what system works for you, because YOUR habit will want to make this happen.

Time management is critical to success in almost anything you do, whether it is planning a covert military operation or your kid's birthday party. But time management is foreign to most people, and commercial systems often feel forced and artificial. By making time management a habit, an internal imperative, you will gain control over your time without having to take time out of your day to do it. In the beginning, the heavens and the earth were created with a perfect environment for mankind to inhabit. The beautifully sculptured planet was quickly populated with humans that began creating their own new environment constructed of concrete and steel.

Swap the chips and dip for something with more nutritional value such as veggies or another lower fat snack. Your appetite may stay the same as you get older, but it is imperative to take better care of your body than ever before. Don't let yourself go just because you feel your past your prime.

You can actually slow down the aging process with regular exercise. Weight training and cardio workouts will keep your heart beating strong and strengthen your muscles, as well as ward off osteoporosis. Try to keep moving three to five times per week for at least 30 minutes at a time for maximum effect. Keeping regular exercise a part of your daily habits will not only keep you looking younger, but feeling younger too.

When life is getting you down, have a little fun! As we get older, we tend to realize that there is more to life than working, eating, and sleeping. Use your extra time, or make extra time, to spend with your family. Go on extra vacations and do the things that truly make you happy. There's no better time to enjoy yourself than right now!

Aging doesn't have to mean the end of your life. Instead of dreading the impending gray hair and wrinkles, use this time to let loose and have some excitement. Remember, feeling young will help you stay young!
