Technology is becoming more and more prevalent in our everyday lives as well as the workforce. Recent studies predict that by the year 2010 almost every job in the American workplace will require some use of technology. This influx in technology has caused changes in the way the computer is being used in the workplace and in the way computer literacy needs to be taught in our schools.

When the personal computer was first introduced in the 1980s, people had to learn how to operate it, program it, and utilize its basic functions. Today, people and businesses are becoming more familiar with technology and using it more as a tool for such things as information gathering, data analysis and interpretation, presenting information, problem solving, communication, etc. This technology is also continually being updated and changed to allow for more efficient and productive work, causing people to have to keep pace with this new information. In such a knowledge-based economy, knowing how to locate information quickly, evaluate this information for bias and accuracy, and synthesize and apply that information to solve problems will be needed and valued skills. Therefore, teaching students skills such as these will better prepare them for the workforce of the 21st century.

Simply providing students with technology in isolated computer classes will not teach students these necessary skills or how to use the computer as a tool. After all, the end result is not wanting students to simply know how to operate computers but how to use them as a tool for organization, communication, problem-solving, and research.

Technology needs to be integrated into the curriculum using an active/inquiry-based method of learning. In this method, instead of students being shown specific steps to follow to solve a problem and then solving problems from a textbook, they are given a real world problem to solve and must create their own strategies for data gathering, analyzing, hypothesizing and testing solutions. By constructing their own strategies, they gain a deeper understanding of problem-solving skills. By solving real world problems, students are better able to relate their learning to their own lives and similar future situations. Oftentimes the students work in groups to solve their problems which enhances students interpersonal skills and teamwork. They also learn to accept different perspectives, work cooperatively, and state their opinions and feelings. After all, few jobs require people to work in total isolation; therefore, being able to work with others is an important aspect of society and the workplace.

Students should be given a number and variety of technology resources to use in order to find a solution to their problem, such as internet resources or search engines, communication/email with experts, books, software programs, spreadsheet programs, graphing programs, etc. Students may also be required to conduct their own hands-on experiments or participate in online collaborative research. However, instruction should be given on how to analyze information for bias and accuracy. Students should realize that not everything on the internet is true or correct. Since the information is not merely presented to the students in a lecture format they are required to critically think about it, interact with it, analyze it, and use it to formulate a solution. This type of instruction enhances critical thinking and higher order thinking skills and helps students demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content and concepts presented as well as the problem-solving process.

Students should also have choices in how their information and solution is presented. Formats such as PowerPoint presentations, posters, brochures, pamphlets, reports, web pages, and movies created with technology can be utilized. Giving students a choice in their final presentations not only allows them to showcase their talents and strengths but allows students to make their own decisions about the best ways to present their data to others, which is oftentimes required in the workplace.

Incorporating technology into the classroom using an active/inquiry-based method enhances the skills required for success in the 21st century. It requires students to use the computer as a tool to gather information, analyze data, and present a solution to a given problem. These are the skills that the technology rich environments of today emphasize and require; therefore, using technology in this manner will aide students in developing life long skills that can be carried over to the workforce.

Teaching a kid to fish does not have to be difficult, if you follow the right steps. There is an old Chinese proverb that states:

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. How true that is, teach a kid to enjoy fishing and you will have a lifetime fishing partner! I taught my kids to fish, while pulling out my hair, and now they love it. I will show you how to take the pain out of this task so that they will come to love fishing and the outdoors.

First and foremost you must be patient with your kids as they learn to cast for the first time. They become aggravated when they cant cast as far as you can, then quickly want to move on to another task that they already have an interest in. Out comes the Game boy. I created a game for my kids that we played at home in the yard; you may find this fun and helpful.

Make three targets and set them out in the yard at ten, fifteen, and twenty feet away. Then assign a point value for each target, say ten, fifteen, and twenty points. We always played to a score of fifty. They may only play once or twice a week so let them win some too! Now you have a game they can play to learn the task of casting before you go to the lake.

Now that you have a cast master, its off to the fishing hole!

Show them how to properly tie a fishing knot by tying on your hook on your line as they follow along, tying on their own hook. This can be done in conjunction with the casting game. In steps frustration, dont let them struggle with this task too long or they will lose interest. Out comes the Game boy. Ask them if they want you to do it, remember it has to be a fun experience.

Now for the prey, be sure to target fish that are easy to catch. Bluegills for example are abundant around most docks and marinas, and are very easy to catch. Use very small hooks and a small piece of worm for bait with a bobber.

Crappies are also easy to catch, and eat; they are located around boat docks with brush piles under them. Check with local marinas to see if they have a crappie house, if you dont have a boat. Using live minnows for bait and a bobber so they can see when they get a bite.

Catfish are also simple to catch. They are bottom feeders and eat minnows, stink bait, and a host of over the counter and home made baits as well. I recommend a sliding weight above the hook. Let the fish take the bait on a free line, if they feel the resistance they will drop the bait. Set the hook while the line is moving and you will catch the fish almost every time.

Dont try to make them a bass pro on the first trip, keep the action fast. I recommend a Zebco 33 spin cast reel. Its very dependable and near indestructible, it will last them for many years. Use a light rod not more than 56 long, any longer than that and their casting accuracy goes way down. Also with a light rod that one pound crappie seems to be as big as a whale. I would buy monofilament line not larger than 10 lb test in strength. Heavier line will make it more difficult to cast, and I believe lighter line catches more fish. A small tackle box is a must have for every junior angler!

Dont go out there and set junior up with a crappie rig and you tie on this pretty spinner bait, they will want to use the same bait as you do. Stay away from treble hooks! There are way too many points to stick into too many different places.

As I close be sure to teach them about conservation. Keep only what you will eat. Dont throw your excess bait into the lake, give them to another fisherman. Everyone in marketing faces it at one time or another - reluctance to pick up the phone and make calls. Logically, it makes no sense to feel that way. We believe in our product or service. We have a script thats either been given to us or one that weve carefully written out. We have a list of prospects that are at least somewhat targeted. We know that when someone says No, its not directed at us. And still the phone weighs a ton.

OK. You decide that the pain of being broke is greater than the pain of cold calling, so you commit to making calls each and every day. Or at least commit to try. Or try at least some days each week. For a while anyway

Weve all been through all of this before, and guess what? IT DOESNT WORK! Were still reluctant to make the calls we know we need to. So whats the deal? Are you just bad at calling? Is it that calling only works for some but not most of us?

The answer, of course, is that calling can work for any one of us. Its a matter of finding the right key(s) to open that door of calling success. We need to address why the typical cold call isnt effective. Well start with the obvious issue. Calling strangers causes most people some amount of anxiety. Why does it make us feel so anxious and apprehensive? Ive found that there are four reasons that cause people to feel anxious about calling. If any one of them exists, anyone would feel anxious about making a call. Here they are:

1) We feel that we sound like a telemarketer. Somewhat unprofessional and/or insincere.

2) We arent sure how to effectively start the call.

3) We arent sure how to effectively steer the conversation.

4) We arent sure how to comfortably and professionally end the conversation.

Lets look at each one of these issues separately and find out how to put them behind us.

1) We feel that we sound like a telemarketer

What makes a telemarketer sound like a telemarketer? Think about it for a moment. You know the drill weve all received telemarketing calls both at home and at work. What is it about that call that marks it as a telemarketing call? There are several factors that make us cringe at these calls. First off, telemarketers are either overly friendly to start with or they sound completely disinterested. Both make the caller sound insincere. Secondly, telemarketers talk and rarely ask. The call is all about their product and service and not about the person who received the call. Thirdly, they usually plow through their script, not allowing us to get a word in edgewise. And fourth, its always evident that theyre reading a script to you rather than speaking to you as a person. Those four factors generally mark the call as a telemarketing call.

How do you keep people from viewing you as a telemarketer? Simple. Dont do those things!

a) When you call, dont be overly enthusiastic and dont be disinterested or matter-of-fact in your tone. Speak in an appropriate, natural tone and manner.

b) As you get into your conversation, ask questions. Be consultative. Remember, this is about your prospect, not about you.

c) & d) Practice your script so it is as conversational as possible. I always write out my script so it reads as naturally as possible. Its usually not perfect writing but it is always natural and easy to say.

2) We arent sure how to start the call

The thing that annoys most of us when a telemarketer calls is that they dive right into some sales pitch without even knowing whether we have the time or interest in hearing about what they have to say. The most effective way to be viewed as a professional is to act like one. As an example, here is the way I start my marketing calls:

Bob? Good Morning. This is Michael Beck. How are you today? (pause) Bob, Im an executive coach (pause I want to make sure they understood what I just said) and have worked with insurance managers for a number of years. Do you have a few minutes to chat?

As simple as the above exchange is, it serves a number of important purposes:

a) In short order, Ive told him who I am and what I do.

b) I said his name two times. (People love to hear their own name. Read How to Win Friends and Influence People)

c) I began to establish credibility. (Ive worked with insurance managers for a number of years.)

d) I asked permission to take some of his time.

3) We arent sure how to steer the conversation

We ended the start of our phone call with a question: Do you have a few minutes to chat? There can only be three answers to that question Yes, No, or What is this about?

If the answer is Yes, youre off and running.

If the answer is No, you could say youll call back or ask when a good time to call back would be, but why not use the opportunity to get more information? Since youve already told him who you are and what you do, why not ask: Would you like me to call back? The answer will either be Yes or No! Either way you should be happy. Either youll know not to waste your time trying to reach a disinterested prospect or youll have a somewhat pre-qualified prospect on your list!

If the response is, What is this about?, have a short explanation of why youve called prepared, something like: I wanted to share some of what I do, find out what your initiatives are, and see whether what I do could help you reach your goals faster and easier.

Pretty straightforward isnt it?

If you approach the meat of your conversation in a way to see if you can help your prospect, rather than sell them something, its quite easy to have a stress-free, effective conversation.

No matter what the goal of your call is, at some point the discussion needs to draw to a close with a trigger question. Can we set up an appointment to go over this in more detail? or Heres what we should do next

4) We arent sure how to end the conversation

How you handle the end of your conversation will determine you well you protect your attitude. We ended the middle of our conversation with a question (see a pattern here?). There can only be three answers to your question Yes, I need more information, or No

If the answer is Yes, again youre off and running.

If the answer is a request for more information, have a simple process ready to provide prospects with additional information and/or credibility-building materials, get a commitment for a follow-up call, and set it up as an appointment in both your calendar and theirs. Dont leave the follow-up as a vague process. Inotherwords get a phone appointment and avoid endless voicemails and phone tag.

If the answer is No, my preference is to thank them for their time and candor, ask them if theyd like me to give them a call back in 6-12 months, and then hang up!

Let me close with a couple of perspectives that have served me and others well over the years.

One perspective is that if you find that any one prospect means a great deal to you, its a sure sign that you arent finding enough prospects. Put in more effort. Then everything else takes care of itself.

Imagine you have a recipe for fantastic chocolate chip cookies and bake them to perfection. Theyre absolutely delicious! You take a tray of these cookies around to people, asking them whether they would like one. The first person takes one and loves it. The next person you offer the cookies to declines - they are full, dont like chocolate, or dont want sweets. Here is the key question: Does the fact that the second person didnt want your cookies affect the quality of the cookies or the skill of the baker? Clearly the answer is no. Their decision doesnt have anything to do with the cookies or the baker. Their decision was about whats going on in your their life, not yours.

When you create an effective phone process knowing how to get into and out of conversations and understand that a No truly is not about you at all, calling becomes more comfortable and it becomes easier to make many more calls. The result? Financial Success!

Continuing from our last discussion, here are other ways in which to build, strengthen, and ehance your relationship.

4.Surprise

If you and your mate have scheduled some time for a Friday night dinner, put together a surprise instead. For example, if your mate loves professional wrestling, buy some tickets near the front or if they like concerts, purchase the tickets ahead of time, getting the best seats possible. When Friday night comes around, insist on driving and head toward the location where the event is taking place. When asked where you are going, simply answer, I have a surprise for you. I know you love professional wrestling so I purchased two great seats for tonights performance, or I know we had planned on going to dinner, but I wanted to surprise you with something special. I purchased tickets to see one of your favorite groups in concert. The idea of you getting the tickets for something THEY like and then keeping it as a special surprise will touch the heart!

5.Needed Space

As important as it is to spend quality time together, it is equally important to give each other time to do something they like. If your mate loves to fish but you have no desire to bait a hook with little, slimy worms, or if you like to go to the casino but your mate would rather do something different, encourage each other to take time apart. Try establishing a set time for this very purpose, if possible. For example, perhaps you could determine that every other Friday night is singles night. This is not a time to date other people, but to enjoy preferred activities. Remember that you have to place trust in your relationship. If you try this and then drill them, to see what they did, whom they were with, and where they went, then the exercise has failed.

6.No Debates

If you know that you and your mate have proven differences in opinion on certain subjects, avoid those subjects. As an example, if you are a Republican and your mate is a Democrat, politics should probably be avoided. As the two of you identify new topics that could cause a debate session, stop the conversation before it even gets started.

Short hair wear headbands or lighter more delicate tiaras that dont require too much pinning. Combs and pins or a heavy tiara are less likely to stay in place.
Up swept hair if you are wearing your hair up, a tall tiara will be required so that it doesnt look lost. An elaborate headband would look best, but hair combs and pins could be an alternative.
Hair down a headband is best to keep the hair off the face.
Hair colour dark shades of hair and platinum blondes look best with white crystals and silver tones. Red and light brown hair tones look better with ivory pearls and gold tones.

Choose a tiara according to your wedding / prom dress

Details in your dress should be matched in your tiara. Use crystals with crystals, ivory pearls with ivory pearls etc

If you have floral details in your dress, look for a tiara with floral detail.

As a general rule, if your dress is of a modern design, then it will look best with a modern tiara and accessories. A more traditional style dress suits more traditional tiaras and accessories.

A plain straight modern dress suits tiaras with geometric patterns and/or straight lines.

Silver tone, crystals and white pearls compliment a white dress. Gold tone and ivory pearls compliment ivory and off white dresses. Diamond white dresses (between white and off white) are a good match for gold or silver tones.

1. Attend Every Class

Maybe this seems like second nature to you; if so, great! Good class attendance is worth mentioning, however, because for some students, the realization that no one is going to bust them for cutting class is so liberating that they begin skipping with abandon. If you fall prey to this tempting but very bad habit, you will be behind the eight ball when you have to prepare for a test. Even if you do all of the homework on your own, you will miss out on what your professor emphasizes -- and that's going to be the basis of the test. If you go to class, pay attention, and take notes, you will go a long way toward acing the test. If, on the other hand, you are reading this after a period of missing class from time to time, try to catch up with a classmate willing to share the notes with you.

2. Do Your Homework When You're Supposed To

Again, this tip might seem too simple to mention, but since it's a major part of a fool-proof strategy for acing a test, it's really not. Don't leave your reading assignments until the night before the test. There is no way you'll be able to absorb the information as effectively as you would have had you been doing the assignments as they were assigned. In addition, by doing your homework and being prepared for class, you will get more out of your experience in class, thereby increasing your chances of getting the coveted A.

3. The Days Leading Up To The Test

I really can't emphasize enough how helpful going to class and paying attention is. If you have done that, much of your preparation for the test is already done. What should you do in the days leading up to the test?

A. Review the notes you took. Make sure you understand them.

B. Your professor or TA might give you a review sheet with examples of questions, important concepts for the test, etc. Study this important resource and make sure you understand it as well.

C. Ask your professor about anything from your notes that now seems unclear to you. Your professor will probably have a review day, or at least a period for questions on the day before the test. Take advantage of this opportunity by asking prepared, informed questions.
