8 Reasons To Use A GPS

Do you have a good sense of direction? Do you get lost going around the block? Would you like to have your GPS talk to you and tell you when to turn? Do you find Map Questing a waste of time? If you have answered yes or no to any of these questions, read on.

I recently had the use of a GPS directional driving device. I was really impressed by the amount of freedom I now had while driving my car. I like the way it warns me ahead of time when I need to turn.

8 Reasons to Use A GPS

(1)You do not need to know the address you are driving from.

(2)It will keep your frequently addresses filed in memory.

(3)If you need to see a map you can request it.

(4)It will notify you in advance when you will turn.

(5)It will tell you when you are at your destination.

(6)If for some reason you miss your turn it will reprogram automatically and take you through another route.

(7) It will take you to the restaurant of your choice.

(8) It will take you to the closet gas station.

I could not believe it but I found myself talking to this little box. It was great company and it did talk back in its own way by telling me where to turn.

If you do not have any sense of direction or drive to new locations frequently, this is definitely the way to go.

Free Clinics Medical Treatment

Many individuals work full-time with no benefits, cannot afford medical insurance on their own or simply are unable to find a job that offers medical care. For many, free clinics are their only chance for medical treatment. Available to both children and adults, free clinics are located throughout the United States and commonly found in largely populated cities. Smaller, local free clinics are found in virtually every area and are the only forms of medical treatment for some children and their families.

The lack of medical insurance is a problem that affects many workers. When an unfortunate event arises, such as a sudden illness or injury, it can wipe out a familys savings instantly. While free clinics primarily offer general care and not surgical procedures, they are essential in helping the patient to determine if more extensive medical treatment may be required. In addition to testing, free clinics may also provide check-ups, immunizations and other common medical procedures.

The best way to locate free clinics is to inquire with the local health department as to the nearest facility. As patients can expect, free clinics are very busy. As such, appointments are typically recommended if at all possible. In the case of an emergency, free clinics may be able to assist a patient or may direct them to the nearest emergency care facility. Early appointments are preferred with patients calling ahead at least one week in advance in order to confirm treatment. In the case of a sudden cold or flu onset, some free clinics have the ability to accept patients on a walk-in basis. This is completely dependant upon the schedule and the number of patients with appointments, but there is always the possibility of receiving treatment as a walk-in patient.

The treatments provided at free clinics are often those conducted by qualified medical students, who are under close supervision by a licensed medical doctor. In exchange for the educational experience to students, a number of medical schools provide free clinics to patients without medical insurance or the income to afford paid medical care.

The information in this article is to be used for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be used in conjunction with, or in place of, professional medical advice. Patients who feel that they require ongoing care, which free clinics may not be able to provide, should consult their nearest hospital or medical center for proper diagnosis and treatments of their ailment.

If you are looking for a Houston clinic, Chicago clinic, Cleveland clinic or just a clinic in your city, state or country you can find it with AZClinics.com

Free GPS Software

I took a look at some of the online offers for free GPS software and found, like many "free" offers there were often limits and provisos involved. Often the freeware is a scaled--down version of purchasable products. Sometimes the free product has restricted functionality with features disabled, other products are trial--based and are disabled after a certain time (hours or days or use).

An example of limited free GPS software can be found at GPS Utility. The downloadable freeware is limited 100 waypoints and 500 track points. (There are 65,000 of each in the registered version of their program.) The free program gives you a good opportunity to try before you buy, and this is the benefit of most free programs.

There are online sites that list various free GPS software and describe how to use the programs after you download them. Often individuals who have used the programs themselves develop the sites. These are great because they give you an unbiased interpretation of the benefits and disadvantages of the programs before you use them.

Using free GPS software you can download programs that allow you to retrieve and display aerial photos, topographical maps, USGS landmarks. There are programs available that allow you import scanned images and add latitude and longitude points and other data.

Free GPS software downloads are available for PDA units that are capable of communication with GPS receivers. With these downloads you can have a useful navigation assistant, location database manager, and GPS data converter.

Programs to manage GPS waypoint and route files are available for both PC and Mac users. The waypoints and route files can be saved or converted to various formats used by other mapping programs.

If you need to transfer information to and from your GPS receiver and your home computer or laptop there are several free programs that allow you to do so. There are also programs that allow Garmin GPS receivers to "talk" to one another.

Many of the programs listed here are directed at the hiking/trekker community, but there are also free programs available for auto GPS systems and marine navigational systems. I found a couple of marine navigation programs that allow you to download nautical charts and plotters.

There are free GPS software programs that allow you to download street maps that might not be included in your auto--navigation system. If you intend downloading in--vehicle software, make sure that it has audio capacity, an essential safety factor for motorists. One such program offers data for several countries with voice guidance in twelve languages.

Free GPS software is also available for downloading to your cell phone. This is mostly tracking software and can be phone specific. You might want to check with your carrier before downloading anything to your cell phone to make sure that it does not incur extra charges.

As satellites are constantly moving, it is helpful to know the optimal time for data collection in your area. There is free GPS software that includes an almanac to let you know the availability of satellites at any given time.

Some of the free GPS software is brand specific. Programs designed for a Garmin receiver may not work for a Magellan, so check out the specifications carefully, especially if you intend purchasing a registered version after your trial period. Other software works with most brands.

Social Bookmarking: A Paradigm Shift

The worldwide web has become a fathomless ocean of information available at the tip of your fingertips, where ignorance has no excuse. Access to seamless knowledge is easy, but retrieval of information relevant to a certain purpose can put your patience to a test. Where exactly do you start?

In a labyrinth of sites throughout the internet, to retrieve information at will is more difficult than finding a piece of needle among haystacks. Remembering specific location of information that need further study may pose a challenge as well.

Bookmarking was born out of these necessities.

Some people access the internet on borrowed time during a coffee break, in the course of research, or in the middle of a conference session. Information they want to keep either for reference or for keepsake find a special place in the bookmark, the most convenient place to store valuable information while in haste.

Bookmarking can be done on addresses in the internet that you frequently visit. This aids you in locating valuable information, at once. News items you wish to read further, or do lengthy research on, can also be put in this special repository. Bookmarking is highly functional almost anything can be saved for later.

But there are disadvantages as well.

Ordinary bookmarking in your PCs browser may allow you to save valuable information but restricts your access to this information in your PC alone. Accessing it from an internet caf, your schools library or from the workplace is futile.

When you have overloaded your browser with stored information, retrieval may slow down, then you are back on square one you will be finding pieces of needles among haystacks again.

Dont despair. Social bookmarking is now here.

Social bookmarking has definite advantages and features, alien to ordinary bookmarking. For one, it has gone public.

Social bookmarking is shared by individuals belonging to a similar bookmarking service like Wirefan. It allows them access to their personal bookmarks anywhere, share these among their friends, or boost their collection with additional bookmarks coming from online friends, as well.

In short, social bookmarking transforms the concept of a once-private activity into a progressive interchange of information among people sharing what they find and gather from their virtual existence.

Every bookmark falls under a classification labeled with tags. Retrieval of select information becomes easier since tags describe whats in store in the bookmark. Organizing and sharing of bookmarks among friends become hassle-free.

Browsing bookmarks belonging to other people, as well as allowing other people to view yours is made possible by social bookmarking, in fact, this feature defines what is social in social bookmarking.

Bookmarks do not merely define your preference, they tell your story. Remember, you are what you hold most dear to your hearts. Therefore, bookmark only what is good, fair and inspiring. We are directly responsible for the kind of influence we put on others.

Tips for Creating a Home Office You'll Love to Work In

I work from home and having a home office that you love to be in is a great blessing. Here are some tips I've used to create my own personal space.

Color is personal and extremely important. Since you can't paint, decorate with fabric. Curtains, upholstery and sofa pillows can all be used to create a space using the colors you love to look at. Consider buying a plush area rug in colors that go with your decor. Even if you already have carpeting on the floor, if the color or carpeting is not pleasing to you, you can still place an area rug over it. Buy the best carpet you can afford that you really love. After all, you can always take it with you and if you love it, you will always find a place for it.

Place your desk where you can look up away from the computer and focus on a window with a view, a piece of art you enjoy, or an arrangement of accessories of some favorite items.

If possible, create a cozy corner with a small sofa or lounge chair with an ottoman, a side table and good lighting. It's good to be able to move to a different position so that you don't get bored or stiff sitting at a desk.

Decorate the room as you would any other room in your favorite decorating style. Don't feel it only should have a desk, computer and file cabinets. Your desk could be nothing but a favorite table where you have lots of room to spread you work on. Consider an armoire for your computer station or as a bookshelf and display for your favorite collectibles. Place a round, to the floor, tablecloth on the end table by your chair. Add a coffeepot or electric teapot to the room. Bring in some favorite photos for the wall.

Flowers are always a welcome accent. If you like scented rooms, use a reed diffuser or effusion lamp filled with scents that appeal to you.

When you work in your room, keep asking yourself, "What do I really like about this office?" What do I really dislike about this office?" Use your answers to gradually create a space you love to work in.

Above all, keep clutter out of your way. It is hard to enjoy working in an area that is always messy and you have to clear out a space to work in it.

Do yourself a favor by creating a favorable work atmosphere where you enjoy going each day. Many times it is not only discipline that keeps people working on a schedule and getting work done at home, but an office that is comfortable, inviting, and functional.

VoIP - Outpaced The Phones?

In today's times, if you have an internet connection, you do not have to pay anything extra for your calling anywhere around the world. This is so because by using the VoIP software, you can use your internet connection to place free long-distance phone calls. This process works by using the available software to make phone calls over the Internet.

This technology has actually been around since quite a time; however, with broadband hi-speed high-speed internet connection, long-distance calling concept has benefited a lot.

There are basically three ways in which VoIP is used these days: 1. ATA: (Analog Telephone Adaptor) is the most common way, which allows phone connection with the internet.

2. IP Phones have an Ethernet connector which gets directly plugged into your router (instead of the usual jack connector that other phones have.) Being in-built, no extra software needs to be installed.

3. Computer-to-Computer: is the simplest and the cheapest way to make computer-to-computer calls. These calls are entirely free. All you need is the software which can be found for free on the internet, a good internet connection, a microphone, speakers, and a sound card. All you pay here is your monthly internet service charges.

Big companies have found a more economical use of this technology for their bigger requirements. This includes conducting all their calls within their international branches through a VoIP network. Using this to route international calls, they thus get away with these calls at local rates.

Today, with this technology, you can make a call anywhere that you have a broadband connection. This means freedom and the facility to make calls from home, or anywhere else where you carry your phone or your computer.

Other benefits as provided by some service providers is the ability to check your voicemail via your e-mail. And also can you attach voice messages to your e-mails.

Seems like VoIP has truly outpaced the traditional telephones.

Working From Home Can Benefit Both the Employee and Employer

Many individuals in todays industries work from home. You will find that the benefits of working from home far out weigh the struggles of having an office job. While you have a bit more flexibility working as a freelance writer rather than with an actual company that delegates work, the benefits of working from home are similar. Jobs working from home can include writing, medical transcription, telecommuting, IT positions, and many more choices. When you consider a job from home, you need to look at the advantages and the disadvantages. Companies that allow telecommuting also have to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages.

When you first begin working from home, you might not be sure you can make it successful enough to pay the bills. You are not going to work for a company, but for yourself. You need to find people willing to work with you and still remain your own boss. Surprisingly enough once you get over being scared it is easy to find work to pay the monthly expenses, while making your own schedule. When you first consider jobs working from home you need to consider three points: can you work from home without the demand of an employer, are you organized enough, and can you work first to play second?

There are positions where you will have a boss, such as the telecommuting positions. You will also find that there are positions with deadlines that give you more flexibility. If you are the type of person that works well when others are there to push you, you are probably not the ideal candidate for jobs working from home. You would be the type of person that needs the hustle and bustle of the workplace as well as other individuals to make you productive. On the other hand if you are the self-motivated type of individual you will do well working from home.

Even though you are working from home and you may not know your schedule on a weekly basis, but rather on a day-to-day basis, you still need to have organization. You need to set up your schedule for the day or week. You will also have to set up boundaries for family interruptions. You may find that working in the early morning hours or after your family goes to bed is a great time for you to work and avoid interruptions. You may find that setting boundaries is enough during the day. Once you have decided that you are the right person for the position you have to then weigh the advantages and the disadvantages of jobs working from home.

Advantages for both the Employee and Employer:

  • Flexible Schedule
  • Family Time
  • No Commute
  • Personal Freedom
  • Financial Benefits
  • Tax Advantages
  • Reduction of Stress
  • Productivity Increase
  • Number of Workers that are available
Some of the above advantages are self-explanatory like having a flexible schedule, reduction of stress, personal freedom, and a reduction on certain expenses. When new mothers have jobs working from home they find a flexible schedule that allows them to get the sleep they need to be productive and still spend time with their infant. There are also other advantages for anyone including mothers working from home. When you have a home based business, there are tax advantages because you can right off your home expenses as business. In other words, a percentage of your rent or mortgage payments, depreciation, property taxes, insurance, utilities, and expenses for household repairs or improvements can be deducted. Other financial benefits include saving money on gas for a commute, car repairs due to road accidents or just general wear and tear on a vehicle. Productivity increases as well. We have mentioned that new mothers get the sleep they need, which helps increase productivity, but you also have to look at the lower stress. When workplace politics or the constant stream of talking and interruptions does not stress you out you tend to have a higher productivity. Being at home allows you to listen to music you prefer or have complete silence if that is how you work. Time management is also a benefit because you can schedule breaks when you need them to let your mind rest while still getting the work done. We have looked at the advantages from an employees perspective, now let us look at some of the same advantages for employers. First employers can save money, just like the employee. An employer can save money based on less space needed for their employees, which means a lower rent. They can also save money on furniture, facilities maintenance, and equipment. When a person works from home, they will generally have the computer equipment needed for the position and a phone line. While the company will have to provide the software and perhaps help set up some of the technology aspects such as telecommunication equipment a majority of their expenses decrease.

They also receive a financial benefit from not having to provide insurance and other benefits. While most companies find it is more beneficial to still provide these advantages, not all of them will. A company also receives a tax advantage for letting employees work from home. Congress is working to pass a bill called the Parents Tax Relief Act 2007. This bill provides incentives for employers who support jobs working from home. The employer can have a tax credit of $2,400 per telecommuter. They can also write off expenses such as computers and broadband access.

These reasons and others are why businesses are supporting telecommuters. They also have access to a higher number of qualified individuals. For an example, a California company that would normally pay an employee $3000 a month for a job can find someone in another state or country to do the same job for half that amount. They can also find a vast resource from individuals who have no way to get to work, such as disabled individuals, who have the knowledge, but no transportation.

Now that you have looked at the bright side of things for both employees and employers, you should look at some of the disadvantages. First, for employees, there are no benefits, you are risking financial security, and you have a wider base of available employers. If you decide not to work for a company, you will not have health benefits, vacation pay, and you could loose a considerable amount of your income. While you may work your way back up to the income, you had before or close when you start out you will most likely take a huge pay cut. Sometimes we need to have the benefits employers offer and that income.

You may not be able to take the risk for other reasons besides money. The risks of staying at home and not having enough work, of not being able to push yourself, and possibly working for an unstable company or not finding enough customers for your at home business can be a huge disadvantage. Lastly, the companies have a wider pool to choose from so you may not get a job right away based on your needs.

For employers, they will lose the advantage of seeing your work. While they will be getting work from you, an employer is not seeing you being productive first hand. They may feel they are loosing time management. Lastly, an employer may feel the tax advantages and savings is not enough to provide employees with the resources to work form home. They will also loose control over your schedule.

With jobs working from home you may not see the disadvantages of employers as a great obstacle when you compare them to the advantages. As an employee, you can certainly work around the disadvantages if it means improving your health and having more family time, especially as a new mother. If you are going to strike out on your own, you need to have a plan or goals. When you decide to work from home, you set up goals for yourself, which includes having a well paying position or positions in six months. You also want to continually increase your income over a period of one year.

Each person is going to be different in his or her goals and the positions they chose. You may find that it takes six months to find a company or person you are willing to work for. If you are going to have your own business and secure your own clients, you will probably have different goals. You will have the control to set your own goals and it is important to set reasonable goals to achieve. You do not want to start out hoping for the moon, only to be disappointed. It will take hard work and play must come second. One of the greatest benefits is when you have succeeded with your goals and you gain more flexibility in the position you have chosen. The top benefit for jobs working from home is the family time you gain. Your children will be able to remember spending quality time that they need growing up, with you.

Factors that Contributes to Cost of Building Projects in Nigeria

(1) Location

The location of a building inadvently contributes a lot to the high/low cost of building. The Nigerian case for class has a long way of affecting cost of building generally, especially Lagos.

What happens in our urban areas is class segregation, a case whereby you were once poor and fits for the slums and outskirts or other areas that are less prime, and suddenly your economic purse changes, the first thing that happens to an average Nigerian is to relocate. Why? because he believes that is where is class is, the only place fits for his children's education, his business e.t.c

There is the general belief that when you move among the high and mighty yourself, you get more connected to where money is, and the probability of getting contracts is there. But people fail to realise that you can connect to anybody and makes friend more easily in today's ICT age without relocating.

Hence you see when a place is designated as Government Reserved Area, what usually happens is the influx of the rich and this turns even a terrible and non-developed land atimes to prime lands overnight just because of class and oppressive nature of the rich. The building artesans/workers ends up charging more when you are building in those area because of the influx of moneybags. So you will end up spending more money and you won't get the land cheap either.

(2) Type or Nature of Soil

This is where a lot of people gets it wrong and shoots themselves on the foot when planning on building projects. Soil types, strong, mild or very strong generally affects the overall costs of the building. soils are classified under five main headings.

1) Rocks, which include igneous rocks, limestones and sandstones

2) Cohesive soils, such as clays where the constituent particles are closely integrated and stick together.

3) Non-cohesive soils, such as gravels and sands, whose strength is largely dependent on the grading and closeness of the particles.

4) Peat which is decayed vegetable matter of low strength with a high moisture and acidic content.

5) Dump site or made ground which may contain waste of one kind or another and can cause settlement or stability problem.

When building your house the nature of soil on your site will go a long way in affecting your purse. Find out if the land is the good loadbearing type and you will cut cost. People digging your foundation will not need to dig so far, and foundation concrete you will also use will be minimal in comparison to weaker soils. Dump site is the worst place to use because you will need to remove the debris, else your foundation will be affected and this will cost you more. The stronger your type of soil the lesser the amount of money you will spend.

The topography or level of your land also is very important for you to spend less, in a case where one portion of your site is very low to the other, surely this will take you more money to manage in terms of either block or split-level constructions.

Make sure you get to the exact portion of the land you are being proposed to, because if you by oversight or carelessness buy a damp site, you will need to effectively drain the water to increase the stability of the ground, to avoid surface flooding, and to avoid dampness of the surface of the inner walls and basements, and also to remove humidity in the immediate vicinity of the building.

I have fallen into a mistake like this before so I know what it may cost you if you do same. Firstly, you may have to fill the land and spend more money, though when you were buying the land in question you paid so less and you were given the impression, that you wont spend more. But you will regret unless you are so rich, I have seen a first hand experience on this, that is why when buying a land is better you buy in the rainning season to give you the opportunity of accessing the site in question. A client once bought a land so cheap but in a very low area, which makes his land a runway for water drainage, you need to witness it when rain is falling yourself, then you might appreciate what I am talking about, strong water currents mind you can overturn a house.

A waterlogged ground will also require reinforcement or iron and concrete which ordinary bungalow in a strong and clear area will not need.

(3) Access to infrastructure

Proximity of land to good infrastructures like road, water, electricity and others goes a long way in affecting the cost of building a house. You may not know, if a tipper can not get access to your site, you will spend 50% of the money you could have used in bringing materials to your site on labour that will carry them. For instance carrying blocks to the site where is actually needed. If water is close that is also an advantage. But this also have is own negative effect on cost of land, but at the long run it is better to buy where all these amenities are in place. Note: consider the cost of running your own pipe, electric poles and grading or clearing the road.

(4) Traffic Access

The human and vehicular access just as explained above can be of great benefit and the influx of people to places like that can also leads to high cost of construction.

(5) Taste, type and Size of Design

High taste demands high cost, your class or status may most likely reflects on the kind of building you want, the type of electrical fittings you want in your house to cater for your utilities, air-conditioner, e.t.c your plumbing fittings to cater for jacuzzi, spas, bathtub, swimming pool e.t.c and other fittings for your comfort and convenience may cause your building cost to rise.

The type of building entails either it is a simple 2,3 or 4 bedroom bungalow or it has to be a duplex/manssionnete. Generally, it costs more to build storey buildings because of the cost of completing concrete floors to just acquiring more lands and building on them for the same numbers of room.

In terms of size the rooms size, the kitchen and other purpose area sizes may even make an ordinary 2 bedroom flat for you to be costlier than another man's 4 bedroom flat. Then talk of additional utility rooms like study, game rooms, prayer room, extra living e.t.c.

(6) The Menace of Omo Onile (Land Owners)

There are cases of Omo Onile trying to outstretch the buyer even when you have paid them their illegal entitlements. Some can go as high as making you repurchase your land again altogether. What of the selling of Government acquired Lands to unsuspecting buyers, this is very, very common in Lagos, God saves you if the Government wakes up one day and decides to ask for their land, you will count yourself lucky if they only ask you to pay or repurchase the land. What if they ask you to evacuate altogether and your building completely bulldozed.

(7) Proximity to Institutions

Educational, Health and Religious institutions dots our landscape but what most dont realize is that they invariably raises the cost of getting lands in their localities, because of influx of people going in and out of these various institutions, commercial activities are always affected positively, thereby bringing business opportunities to those in the locality. An obvious example is Canaanland Ota in Ogun State. You can see the visible increase of properties in this once a forest suddenly turned to haven of investors, and buildings of all manners springing out.

(8) Commercial Viability of the Area in which Building is Constructed

(9) Quality of the priofessionals and artesans involved

If you use quacks for your building project, yes at presence you will spend less but be aware that before the house is completed or after ,you will spend much more if you refused to use a professional. Talk of the cost of maintaining your house after parking in,the quality of the design that an architect could have easily given to you cheaply ,what of the structural disposition of the building that a civil or structural engineer could have given you for extra peanuts or a quantity surveyor that will cost your building and knows if you are heading for the rock ,or the builder that would have made sure your drawing plans is properly represented or executed and standards are not compromised .Get a professional in the field and let him recommend an artesan bricklayer carpenter e.t.c to you or you get one by yourself or one that was recommended for you .you then must make sure you check his old jobs and confirm that it is goodor tell your professional to follow you and access the persons past job, he should be able to point to one.

(10) Materials

building materials also contribute immensely to the quality and cost of house immensely ;from what you used in foundation to the materials of roofing ;there is always an array of prices . Even cement bags are of different prices ;What of the blocks ;they also depends on quality; some can sell theirs #10 to#20 difference from others because of the rich cement mixture ratio and the type of sound, while others could just double the price of lower quality ones. For example "BECO BLOCKS" price is usually double the common ones around in Lagos. I guess you know even in roof there are categories also from the ordinary asbestors roof to the modern aluminium the prices always varies.

(11) Quality of finishes

there are different types of finishing which also raises an issue of taste and money to be spent .Even painting atimes can cost more than what is required to buy major materials in another persons building. With the advent of more technological breakthrough in building accessories, where you can now have bullet proof doors and windows with metal detectors, with furniture companies coming out each day with new innovations, there is bound to take into serious considerations the cost of finishes in overall costing of your house.
